چکیده

All-metal sandwich construction holds promise for significant improvements in stiffness, strength and blast resistance for built-up plate structures. Analysis of the performance of sandwich plates under various loads, static and dynamic, requires modelling of face sheets and core with some fidelity. While it is possible to model full geometric details of the core for a few selected problems, this is unnecessary and unrealistic for larger complex structures under general loadings. In this paper, a continuum constitutive model is proposed as an alternative means of modelling the core. The constitutive model falls within the framework of a compressible rate-independent, anisotropic elastic– plastic solid. The general form of the model is presented, along with algorithmic aspects of its implementation in a finite element code, and selected problems are solved which benchmark the code against existing codes for limiting cases and which illustrate features specific to compressible cores. Three core geometries (pyramidal truss, folded plate, and square honeycomb) are considered in some detail. The validity of the approach is established by comparing numerical finite element simulations using the model with those obtained by a full three-dimensional meshing of the core geometry for each of the three types of cores for a clamped sandwich plate subject to uniform pressure load. Limitations of the model are also discussed. Copyright 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Non-uniform Hardening Constitutive Model for Compressible Orthotropic Materials with Application to Sandwich Plate Cores

A constitutive model for the elastic-plastic behavior of plastically compressible orthotropic materials is proposed based on an ellipsoidal yield surface with evolving ellipticity to accommodate non-uniform hardening or softening associated with stressing in different directions. The model incorporates rate-dependence arising from material rate-dependence and micro-inertial effects. The basic i...

Potential applications of metal foams include light weight cores for sandwich panels, shells and tubes where the foam can increase the resistance to local buckling, increase the impact resistance, and improve the energy absorbing capacity of the structure [1,2]. This latter property offers potential uses in transportation applications where, for example, foam-filling of the hollow sections of a...

Quasi-static Punch Indentation of a Honeycomb Sandwich Plate: Experiments and Modelling

Punching experiments on wide honeycomb sandwich beams were performed to evaluate the predictive capabilities of a newly developed constitutive model in structural applications. The employed constitutive model for plastically com-pressible orthotropic materials accounts for both non-uniform hardening and softening associated with stressing in different directions. This feature is vital when asse...

A New Quasi-3D Model for Functionally Graded Plates

This article investigates the static behavior of functionally graded plate under mechanical loads by using a new quasi 3D model. The theory is designated as fifth-order shear and normal deformation theory (FOSNDT). Properties of functionally graded material are graded across the transverse direction by using the rule of mixture i.e. power-law. The effect of thickness stretching is considered to...

Static Flexure of Soft Core Sandwich Beams using Trigonometric Shear Deformation Theory

This study deals with the applications of a trigonometric shear deformation theory considering the effect of the transverse shear deformation on the static flexural analysis of the soft core sandwich beams. The theory gives realistic variation of the transverse shear stress through the thickness, and satisfies the transverse shear stress free conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the bea...
